Animating Sprite Sheets - Tips for Consistency
Practical techniques to keep your AI-generated sprite animations consistent across poses, directions, and frames.
Animating Sprite Sheets - Tips for Consistency
Small inconsistencies ruin otherwise great pixel art animations. Here are practical techniques to keep frames aligned and styles consistent, even if you use AI to speed up production.
1) Lock your grids
- Fix canvas size per frame (e.g., 64×64)
- Use a baseline for feet and a centerline for the torso
- Keep a register layer visible to check alignment
2) Define motion arcs
Sketch arcs for head, hands, and feet. AI variants are easier to correct when you know the intended path of motion.
3) Tighten silhouettes
At 1-2 px, a stray pixel shifts the read. Pass through each frame zoomed out at 100% to catch flicker.
4) Keep render passes consistent
When iterating with AI, save the exact prompt, size, and style notes. Apply the same cleanup pass: outline, shading, and palette correction.
5) Test at game speed
Preview at target frame rate in your engine. Look for jitter, foot sliding, and unreadable poses.
